PLEADING
GUILTY IS SELDOM THE Criminal Charges in Canada fall into three separate categories:
In Alberta, an agent can appear on your behalf for Summary Criminal matters if the maximum sentence is six months or less, and the appearance is permitted by the presiding judge. An agent can also appear on a blended offence if the Crown Prosecutor elects the summary mode of trial and the sentence is six months or less. An agent can not represent you or appear on your behalf for an Indictable Criminal Offence. Most minor criminal charges like Possession of Stolen Property, Assault and minor drug offences are Summary Matters and an agent can assist you. If the charge is more serious than this, it is suggested that you talk to duty counsel prior to your court appearance and then seriously consider retaining a trained criminal defense lawyer. In most cases we can represent you in person for a matter that is being heard in any Southern Alberta court. If you are appearing in other areas of the province, then WE can provide you with telephone and email consultation on handling your own defence. While it is almost always wise to retain the services of a lawyer, in many cases defendants can not afford the cost. We will provide you telephone consultation and advice on how to handle your own defence in matters as stated above. We can examine the disclosure documents you receive from the Crown and advise you of possible defences that may be used. We are not lawyers and as such our roll is limited to giving you options and our personal opinions. We charge fees starting at $105 for this service.
